How Personal Should I Get When Sharing My Experiences?
One of the most common questions in personal branding is how much of one's personal story to share. For CEOs and leaders, this balance is critical: you need to be seen as professional and credible, but also as human and relatable. This episode breaks down why personal storytelling is so powerful and how to use it effectively.
1. Personal stories build trust.
Credentials and achievements matter, but they are not enough on their own. Trust grows when people see the person behind the title. Sharing your origin story, lessons learned, or challenges faced gives others a window into your values and character.
2. Relatability makes leadership memorable.
Facts inform, but stories stick. When you connect your experiences to your leadership narrative, you give people something they can remember, repeat, and connect with emotionally. This makes your personal brand more than a résumé; it makes it human.
3. Boundaries keep you authentic, not exposed.
Being personal does not mean telling everything. You choose the stories that align with your values and comfort level. The key is intentionality: share what reinforces your credibility and shows your humanity, not what distracts from it.
4. Personal storytelling positions you as a thought leader.
Thought leadership is not only about your ideas but also about the lived experiences that shaped them. By blending professional insights with personal moments, you demonstrate depth, authenticity, and trustworthiness, the qualities people look for in a leader.
Final Thought:
The most powerful stories are not the ones that make you look perfect. They are the ones that make you human, credible, and real. Share your journey with intention, and you’ll find that the right personal stories not only strengthen your influence but also enhance your legacy.

How personal should I get as a thought leader? How personal should I get with my stories as the CEO and thought leader in the industry? I think you should go personal. We all are humans and we love human stories. And helping people to understand where you come from, which is the origin story, and how you got to where you are today, will help people to dive deeper into your personality, into your values, and through that they will trust you more.
Storytelling on a personal level is super helpful to position yourself as a trustful thought leader. And CEO in the industry. Don't worry about that. It is too personal because you are always, and if you don't want to share a certain topic, that's absolutely fine. Important is that you understand the power of storytelling and then you share what you are comfortable with.
